Hey guys, I made a quick player rankings using my grading sheet that I’ve been doing for Poptart. Thought I’d use it to guess who’s going pro.
1] AceBSilent (Duo)
Ace is washed up, but still better than everybody else. I don’t know how he does it. I’d love to play with him once in my life, maybe I’d learn something. He’s the only player who has “mastered” every role on the court.
2] The Eastbrook
There’s good day Larry, and bad day Larry. I’m ranking him based on good day Larry. Decent tank, plays impenetrable defense, and a pain in the ass to get the ball back from. He’s also the most creative player I know, which counts for me more than you’d think. However, bad day Larry comes out to play too often. And that guy probably doesn’t even crack top 10.
SUPER HYPE 3-WAY TIE WARNING!!!
T-3] ixGingy (Captain)
Some of you might think I’m trolling when I put Gingy at #3 overall, but I’m serious. Gingy has been a tanking god all IGL season with the sole exception of a Final Boss playoff game where he STILL WON. Which is very scary, gingy going negative and winning is the exact opposite of H4 Gingy. He’s lowkey amazing on defense, if you check out my stats page (quick plug: http://grifballstats.com/IGLindex.php) he’s ahead of Sab on carrier kills this season in IGL (and 2nd overall in the league!).
T-3] Saintz The God (Captain)
I told Saintz that he’s never going to crack the top 5 if he never uses his sword. It’s too powerful to just be used as a Y-Y tool. Luckily he took my advice (actually I probably had nothing to do with it) and it’s rounded out his already stellar game. Reformed Saintz is gunning straight for the championship in his return to the AGLA.
Here’s the kid. Has a complete game, which I love in a player. Undeniably good, I just think he’s a half step below Ace everywhere. Which could easily change over time, since Ace has years of play on him. I also want to hear more trash talk from him :) Even though I have Larry above him, I expect Galv to go for the most credits because he’s way more consistent, and easier to play with.
EDIT: Apparently Galv isn’t going into bidding. RIP.
6] InfiniteRainge (Captain)
Honestly, the return of Saintz and resurgence of Gingy hurt Rain a little. It made his tanking look not quite as dominant in comparison. Still, on the right day, Rain can end up 30 kills ahead of them both in a game. My only knock on him is that the other god tanks (Galv, Saintz, Gingy) seem to have rounded out the rest of their game a little more than he has. Which isn’t to say Rain is really weak anywhere else, I’ve still seen him bust out his sword plenty and get some god lunges like he used to in Reach.
7] Sabasaouras Rex (Duo)
My dad puts in the work where it counts. Gets the important kills. Him and Saintz duoing is basically the only thing more deadly than him and gingy duoing, so I’m excited to watch them team together for the first time ever. Either they’re going to the ship, or this team implodes week 2 when Sab makes a mistake, Saintz call him garbage and brings up WL14, and Sab finally snaps and quits forever.
Ok, so for the #8-13 positions there are several ties. Like I said before, I’m doing this based on my player grades, so when I have people at the same overall score I’m just saying their tied. And the next 6 people were only 0.2 points apart, so don’t read into the order too much. I pretty much think they’re all equally talented.
T-8] Ouglaf (Duo)
By far the person I’ve played the least against in the top 10. I’ve mostly just played against him in GGL games. Everybody knows he can land those defensive punches on swords, but what I hated most about playing against him was his wallhop usage as a runner. Maybe nets started it, but Ouglaf perfected it.
T-8] Invayda Zim (Duo)
A true up-and-comer. Everybody knows he can compete with any tank in the league, and he’s got a great sword on top of it. My favorite thing about him takes a story to explain though. In one of our first games as 4G1B in the GGL this season, I was playing with him and Sab. We were pushed up on offense, and I was tanking near the enemy pad. I saw a small gap in their tanks, and instantly sprinted towards the pad, not saying anything aloud. Our runner threw the ball and it met me there for the score. I said “nice pass Sab”, knowing it was him, because that was the kind of thing we always did in H4. It’s not a hard pass. But it does takes awareness from the runner to realize what I’m thinking, and to throw the pass without hesitation, because if there’s any delay it will be intercepted, or I’ll die before it arrives. But after I complimented Sab, Dark said something like, “that was me passing not sab you fool” and I was like oh. That’s when I realized this guy was really good. He’s capable of adapting to any team’s playstyle.
I said at the very beginning of the IGL season that Final Boss was the best team in the league and Silva is the one to watch, not Dig or Saintz. I stand by that, and attribute a lot of their success to Silva’s running. Recently he’s been trolling and deciding not to run and they’re paying the price with some losses, but he’s still good. Competent at hammer and sword tanking.
T-10] Rage More Nerd (Captain)
Another guy who has a well rounded game and gets the important kills, like Sab. But I have to put rage a bit lower because he’s more inconsistent on the tanking. Still very good, and kills are optional anyways. He also has the most clutch defense, but that goes without saying.
T-12] Digital Pain (Duo)
Speaking of inconsistency tanking, that’s the main thing holding Dig back from being like, top 7. I’m never quite sure if Dig will be going +50 or -10 when we’re loading into the game, but by the end of round 1 I’ve usually figured out. I think that could be fixed if he played customs more consistently, but we’ll see. He’s got a pretty good sword, and good overall understanding of the game. My only other knock on him is his running. I feel like he goes for punches on hammers way too often, relying on his thruster to pull him out if he gets popped up. But thruster isn’t always enough to save him.
T-12] Tariq (Duo)
Tariq is a weird player. Everybody talks about his “aerial tanking” but I don’t agree with that, it seems like he’s free kills once he’s in the air. On the ground he can be deadly tank, but just like Digital, I’ll never know if he’s about to drop mad positive or just sputter around. I’ll give him credit for one thing though, I like his idea of hammer launching himself to intercept passes. It seems like an obvious idea looking back, but because you couldn’t hammer bounce in H4 I never thought of it. He tried to do that against us in our second IGL match, and it didn’t work but I loved it. Just so we’re clear I’m taking that move, it’s mine now. You started it but I’m perfecting it.
14] NetsPride15 (Captain)
Ok so honestly Nets is better than where I have him. I’ll admit it, he’s way too low at #14. But I’m trying to do this based on my player grades, and that system isn’t favorable for him. Call it the Shadow S16 effect I guess, where it’s difficult to point out specific things he’s great at, but he always wins anyways.
DuoCleak described himself pretty well in his signups: “No idea. Maybe I show up maybe I don’t. Same with caring.” If you pick him up, and get him back on the daily grifball grind, he can be a god. When he’s not in tryhard mode he’ll just be running around with the sword all game, which is actually better than it sounds. He’ll accidentally make some pretty amazing plays with that sword.
Ezy has the same thing as DCleak going with the “Maybe I care, maybe I don’t” stuff. I never see him get on for customs, but he still plays well in games. 14 goal offenses in one playoff game over Final Boss? He pops off when the team needs him.
I feel like some people hate on Jea, but I think he’s quite good. If he ends up the 4th on a team, that team is a ship contender, I’m calling it now. I’ve never spoken to him, so I have no idea about his attitude or anything. I just see some of those sick sword lunges he gets, and that he knows what he’s doing with the hammer and ball as well.
18] The Piggies/”Shadow S16″
Sorry, you’re not going Legacy. Just like I said with Jea, if you even go as low as the 4th on a pro team, that’s a championship caliber team. If Pig grinded some sweaty customs she could easily jump about 4 spot on this list within a week.
19] Almighty Tycoon
I have him a little low for his potential. But his IGL season didn’t go well with his teammates quitting on him, and after grinding customs pretty hard at the start of the season, I feel like he completely disappeared for a couple weeks. I finally played against him again in a scrim vs VVV and he didn’t look too hot. My main concern is that he only had ONE sword kill in the IGL. He played 16 games, for a total of 326 minutes, and only managed that single sword kill. This is the same concern I had about Saintz, but Boss is an even bigger offender. He sort of makes up for it with his hammer lunges, but there’s certain things the sword offers in this game that makes you dumb to never use it. I predict he’ll go for more credits than Jeakilla and Piggies despite me having him lower, just because of availability and potential.
20] Killerz Legit
Is he even signing up? I hope so, since he played really well this IGL season. He can usually pick up the tanking slack whenever Gingy or Ezy has an off day, and of course he’s handy with the bomb when he has it.
Almost #19, which would have been perfect with his name. His sword is top 10, but he ended up on an IGL team that doesn’t complement his playstyle. From the little I’ve heard, it sounds like his teammates aren’t super supportive of his “cheesy” sword playstyle. Let ya boy BCN run free and he’ll make the magic happen
We have a tie again, this time between teammates:
T-22] imShad (Captain)
Runners tend to always be in demand, so even though he’s near the pro/legacy border I guarantee he would go pro for more than 10 credits if he was in the pool. That’s a moot point though, because he’s duoing with Tariq. I’m interested to see what his bidding strategy will be. Picking up Galv was the easy choice, but with Galv gone from bidding I’m not sure who can fill that void. As for the 4th spot, I could totally see them going for…..
….the next spot on the list! Noplex must really want to go Pro because he started going ham in IGL playoffs and jumped several spots on my grading sheet. Every part of his game got a little boost. I will say his tanking isn’t super consistent, he can bounce between outtanking Final Boss one game and then going negative the next, but I’m not really one to talk about inconsistency tanking. He plays good defense as well, which is always something I want in a 4th player.
24] The man canon
Canon has the final pro spot on my list, however I left myself out so take it as you will. Even though I have him below Noplex, Killerz, and BCN, he’s probably the most likely of them all to make the Pro cut. Gingy will likely be considering him as a 4th to go with Digital, and he’s played in pro AGLA more recently than BCN or Plex. In my opinion he needs to actually play customs again to earn his pro spot though.
So yeah, that’s 24 players, the size of pro. Each team also gets one draft pick, who serves as the 5th on a pro team but still plays in Legacy. I’ll run through my top candidates for that.
He’s back on good internet now, and more of a threat for it. Solid player all around. Might bump Noplex or BCN out of pro.
It’s a shame he hasn’t been playing more, because he’d go pro 100%. But since missing IGL playoffs I haven’t seen him play once. Maybe we’re just in different customs, but I heard he’s been busy lately. Another candidate for bumping people out of pro.
I highly recommend her as the 4th or 5th on a team. She’s getting new internet at the start of the AGLA season, so hopefully no more lag to hold her back.
If he is even halfway serious about playing I don’t think it will take long for him to become a better tank than anyone outside the top 10. I personally have him with these draft players for now, but I guarantee that a team will take a chance on him in bidding.
5] AJ “IceInHisVeins” Cena
Silva’s not captaining, but I could totally see Saintz using a draft pick on him.
She proved she could compete with the pros when she subbed for Boss. Not sure if he’s subbing her again for their next playoff game, but if so, look out for that.
Alright, now we’ve got 24 Pros and 6 Draft picks. I’ll throw out a couple more names with pro potential that I either haven’t played with much, or are borderline.
I hate to say it, but anybody who didn’t play in this IGL season is behind now. There were a lot of sweaty games/customs that Rick missed out on. I have a hard time judging him because I’ve barely played with him and it was months ago. I’ve heard good things though. He could drop legacy, but there’s probably a captain or two out there willing to spend 10+ on him (Rage maybe?).
I’m betting that a lot of teams are eyeing him as a 10 credit pickup/draft steal. He hasn’t been active lately but if he’s serious about playing he could be a huge asset to any team.
Makes sense as a draft pick for Rains team :eyes:. She was on Ouglaf/Rain’s GGL team and they played her in some games.
One of my favorite ammy players, this guy gives me the work when I run into him in matchmaking. Gotta get him in more NS customs.
