As we all know, it’s no secret that the game of Grifball in Reach has always been a work-in-progress. We’re always open to new ideas on how to improve the game and give it fun, creative twists.
Periodically, we are introduced to something so mind-splatteringly awesome that it must instantly replace what came before. It’s happened before, and it’s happening again.
Relaxing after a long week, GrifballHub staff played several rounds of Smashball last weekend with members of the community. Overcome with joy, we all agreed then and there that Smashball was a far superior game to Grifball. Frankly, it was the greatest creation in the history of man.
In the early morning hours on Monday, we contacted our friends at Bungie and asked them try out Smashball. They agreed, and we spent long hours Monday night playing match after match. We knew then what we had to do.
Longingly, we asked Bungie to remove every Grifball gametype and map from matchmaking and replace them with Smashball on the Official Smashball Court. We were told that it would take a week for the changes to take effect (after all, Bungie already had a massive matchmaking update planned). Although we were saddened that the changes couldn’t be make instantly, we understood the delay.
Finally, on Monday April 4th, the Grifball playlist will be no more. It will be replaced with a permanent Smashball playlist that will feature the one gametype and map. After you’ve played the greatest online-sport-inside-a-first-person-shooter, what else would you need?
Of course, all future “Grifball” leagues will instead be Smashball leagues. The next season of the Good Games League will feature the one gametype. Team captains will no longer have a “choice” about what gametype or map they would like to use. After all, once you’ve played Smashball, you’d be crazy to choose anything else!
On one hand, we anticipate that some people unfamiliar with Smashball might have an issue with these sudden changes. On the other hand, those people are ugly and unloved.
Lastly, we are going to hold one final Grifball tournament tonight to say goodbye to the God-forsaken sport. Appropriately, the contest will be called the Forsaken GRUNT, and will feature Grifball Dash on Cliffside. Signups will open tonight at 11:00PM EST. After the tournament, we will boot up Forge and destroy every Grifball map that is currently in matchmaking, piece by piece.
Smashball will have its own well-celebrated arrival on Sunday, April 3rd. We invite all Smashball players to get warmed up for the new playlist by entering our Smashball GRUNT at 2:00PM EST on Sunday. All teams are welcome, regardless of their Smashball experience. See you on the (Smashball) court!
