TheHolmcross plays for Team HLC (Hard Liquor Chasers) and has been a part of the grifball community for a full year as of this month. Team HLC bounced back from a disappointing Summer season to finish second in their Winter league division, earning a spot in the playoffs. They will next be participating in the Halo3Planet Elite league.
1. How long have you been involved with the sport of Grifball?
I became involved in February 2008 prior to the H3P Spring Smash
2. What kind of player are you?
I’m a trick runner by trade, but I’m slowly working myself up in all areas. I try to be a smart runner, but I’m not what you’d call a pussy footer by any means. I have a tendency of throwing caution to the wind when I see a need or opportunity arise, which has led to plenty of WTF moments.
3. If you could change one thing about Grifball or its community, what would that be?
This will never happen, but I’d like to see teams have owners who draft people to play for their team.
4. Is there a player/team that has inspired your style of play?
I’d have to say hands down Marathon Runners. I played against them when we were a new team and got beaten down 9-0, played them again in the 2nd round of the GBSL08 where we lost 7-2 in an epic showdown, then we were in the same division for the GBWL09 where we beat them twice by scores of 6-3 and 7-2. Their play style as a team has been similar to ours, so when we saw how good they were, I felt inspired as to how good we could be in time.
5. Name one player who always gives you fits when you play against them. What makes them so difficult?
I’m just gonna go ahead and say everyone on Bleep Bloop! They are the one team that I never play well against. Whether it’s hammers or swords, every last person on that team always seems to outplay me, not matter what I do. I don’t know if it’s their play style or teamwork or what, but it’s effective.
6. Name one player you think is underrated by most. Why?
I’m going to have to say Soviet Jesus/KGB Blaine. Most people think he’s so-so simply because of his terrible K/D spread which will rarely be positive, but in spite of that, he has a tendency to get tons of bomb stops and a few scores per game in spite of of the -30 he probably threw up.
7. Name one player you think is overrated by most. Why?
I’m sorry to say, but half of the 9th Wonders I think. Most people think they’re good because of all the wins, but if you take away the host their tanks tend to pull, many teams will put their backs against the wall.
8. Besides Grifball, what other games/sports do you play?
I played baseball for 10 years, before a torn extensor muscle in my hip ended any chances of me playing competetively again. I played basketball for 9 years as well. In high school I had a 150 average in bowling, and I was very good at foosball.
9. In your opinion, do stats matter in Grifball?
Stats I think are just a good measuring stick of how good of a player you are, though based on your position, you need to make sure you’re looking at the right stats. However, in the end, the only thing that matters is if you managed to win the game. Your +50 doesn’t really matter if you lost 6-3.
10. If you could offer words of advice to rookie players, what would they be?
Watch as much video of Legacy games as you can and try to play in as many pick up games with Legacy players as you can. They may beat your ass, but you’ll become a much better player at a much faster rate than you would scrimmaging against other rookies.
