Grifball FAQ

Grifball is a custom gametype within Halo 3, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, and Halo 5: Guardians that was designed to play like a sport rather than a first-person shooter.  Two teams of four players face off on opposite sides of a court with a ball spawning in the center.  At the start of each round, the two teams rush to the center of the court to retrieve the ball.  Once a team has possession of the ball, they can score by planting it on the opposing team’s goal, while the opposing team attempts to stop them from doing so and force a turnover.

Each player spawns with a hammer and a sword to help each team accomplish these tasks.  Players can use the hammer to quickly take out opposing players without the ball from a distance or, while the sword can be used to try and take out a ball carrier in one hit, forcing a turnover.  The runner (the player carrying the ball) doesn’t have access to either of these weapons while carrying the ball, but does gain increased speed, damage resistance, and the ability to “stiff-arm” defenders from close-range with good timing.

The game is primarily played either with a number of untimed rounds or with a single timed continuous round.  League play typically uses nine untimed rounds, with the game ending once a team has scored five goals.  Matchmaking will normally use the single timed round variant.

Although Grifball is a very simple concept that’s easy to pick up and grasp, mastering it requires knowledge of all the little intricacies of the game which can only be obtained in one way: lots and lots of practice.  While the Match Composer is a great way to get some practice and start developing your Grifball skills, the best way to get practice and learn all the little things that veteran players do to take their game to the next level is to regularly play with and against those veteran players.  Aside from PlayGrifball leagues and events, the easiest way to do that is to get into custom game lobbies with league players – if you want to find a game, try asking around on our Discord server, where players regularly put together custom lobbies.

In addition to practice, we regularly post a variety of Grifball-related content, including some tips and tricks articles and veteran player interviews that can give you some additional pointers.

GrifballHub is home to over 3,000 registered Grifballers and has produced more than 2,000 articles covering the sport of the future. GrifballHub also has a regular presence at industry events, such as PAX and RTX.

It also hosts three very successful Grifball leagues: The Good Games League (GGL), a “friendly” Grifball league, and the European Grifball League (EUGBL), a league created exclusively for European Grifballers, and the American Grifball League of America (AGLA), the league created by Grifball-founder Burnie Burns. Other features on GrifballHub include a weekly podcast, live-streamed Grifball matches, and highlight reels. GrifballHub’s work has been featured on Kotaku, Bungie.net, and Halo Waypoint.

It is with immense sadness and pride that we announce that GrifballHub will be closing its doors next spring. Sadness because this is truly the end of an era for our community; Pride because we can look back with sheer astonishment at all we have built, all we have accomplished, and all the joy GrifballHub has brought to players around the world.

So many people have poured so much into this site over the past decade. From its original founders to the current moderators and admins; from the team captains to every Grifball player, each and every person’s contribution has been unique, worthwhile, and deeply appreciated.

GrifballHub was a major part of our lives for nearly a decade. When we first started writing articles about the AGLA and ran our first GGL season with just six teams, we never imagined how wildly successful this site would become. We ran leagues with hundreds of Grifball teams. We created Grifball maps and gametypes for matchmaking. We had direct input in the creation of Grifball in Halo 4 and Halo 5. And we achieved what we consider the pinnacle of our efforts: Showcasing the sport and our community at RTX four years in a row.

It boggles the mind to think about how a sports-game-within-a-first-person-shooter, originally created as a joke, survived and thrived for a full decade. But the answer lies in the most essential part of GrifballHub: Our community.

Grifball and GrifballHub continued to exist by the sheer force of will of hundreds of fans. That dedication drove us forward, and we are immensely proud of having created a safe and welcoming environment for all players on our site. While the competitive aspects that come with any sport were always present, in the end our community thrived because of a common love for the game.

GrifballHub has also helped a number of people achieve their dreams, springboarding them into real careers in the gaming industry. We are very proud that GrifballHub was able to open doors for so many, allowing them to take the skills they mastered on our site and apply them in the real world. That alone makes the entire endeavor worth it.

To everyone who ever joined our community, watched our livestreams, or picked up a hammer: Thank you.

Although GrifballHub will soon be closing its doors, and our forums will be set in “read-only” mode, Grifballers will still be able to enjoy the Sport of the Future at a new site, run by long-time community leaders Sonic and Rage. The leagues will be moving to a beautiful new home which is fully functional and better able to address the needs of the community.

More details will come in the next several weeks, but the Hub will remain open until the current GGL season ends. The next season of the AGLA will begin on the new site.

With deepest appreciation,
