After weeks of intense action, exciting drama and… well… lots of forfeits, the 10th season of the European Grifball League has finally been wrapped up. The EUGBSML11 (European Grifball Summer League 2011) was hosted by commissioner Teaguey222 from Sarge’s Angels and was held for around a 10 week period, with 12 teams entering in 2 divisions. 6 playoff places were up for grabs using the standard Grifball Vanilla rules on the Bloody Grifball court. Now that the season has finished, it’s time to look at the season in all its glory, and its not so glorious moments too. Or, if you just want to see who won, just skip to the bottom. Let all my hard grafting go to waste. Not trying to make you feel guilty if you do. But you should. But anyway, on with the season.
Division 1 was made up of the long-running Sarge’s Angels, The Elite Spartans, the inconveniently named Screw The Rules And Come At Me Bro!, Armada of the dead, Faster Than Light, and The Avengers. This division was filled with forfeits as half of the teams in the division dropped out. The Elite Spartans were folded due to a lack of players while The Avengers failed to play any games and therefore forfeited. Armada of the dead retired from the season, but did manage to get a game done against Sarge’s Angels – in a 7-2 defeat.
This left three teams to compete for the places in the playoffs, but seeing as the three teams where guaranteed a place, it was just a case of who would win the division and would get seeded straight into the semi-final stage. After a series of games between the teams, Sarge’s Angels would come out on top, picking up 3 wins over their opponents, suffering 1 loss to STRAJCAMB!, who in turn managed 2 wins with a win and a loss over both teams. Faster Than Light managed to pick up a 7-2 win over STRAJCAMB! All three teams made it to the playoffs, with Sarge’s Angels being seeded straight into the semi-finals while Screw The Rules And Just Come At Me Bro! and Faster Than Light had to face each over in the quarter finals.
Division 2 was made up of the 3-time EUGBL champions Grifballs of Steel, Johnson’s Salty Grifballs, League of Super Evil, Team Impact, Storm Hawks and Time Traveling Ghost Robots. This division also suffered from a lack of activity, with only Johnson’s Salty Grifballs managing to play each team at least once. Time Traveling Ghost Robots only played one game in a 9-0 defeat to JSG, while Team Impact only played two games in two losses to JSG. League of Super Evil also only managed two games, in a loss to JSG and a loss to Storm Hawks.
In the division, Johnson’s Salty Grifballs came out on top, managing to win all 8 games that they played, and also picked up two forfeit wins too. The other two teams battling for a place in the playoffs where Storm Hawks and Grifballs of Steel. Both of these teams managed to get into 2nd and 3rd, picking up forfeits over the other teams, but the most controversial moment was when these two teams faced off. After a bizarre scenario, a game between the two was ended early when a member of Storm Hawks scored during a pause in play, claiming it to be by accident trying to avoid the approaching GBOS players. With arguments of lagging and cheating being thrown around by both teams, the two teams finally decided that GBOS would be given the forfeit win for the match. However, in the end, the two teams still made it into the playoffs where they had to play again, with Johnson’s Salty Grifballs heading into the semi-finals.
With the forfeiters now out of the league, only the cream of the crop remained in the playoffs, with six dedicated teams remaining. In the first playoff game, STRAJCAMB! managed to overcome Faster Than Light in a 5-4 encounter, securing a place in the semi-finals against Johnson’s Salty Grifballs. This game was very standard, with nothing special to note about it. The same could not be said about Storm Hawks vs. Grifballs of Steel, which was once again produced drama. In a game between the two, GBOS claimed that one of their players was black screened and therefore the game should be replayed, even though the score was 5-0 to Storm Hawks. After a drama between the two, with more arguments of lagging and cheating, commissioner Teaguey222 intervened and after checking footage of the game, awarded the win to Storm Hawks with the score of 5-0, meaning that Storm Hawks would face Sarge’s Angels in the semi-final.
The first encounter in the semi-final saw the defending champions Screw The Rules And Just Come At Me Bro! facing the undefeated Johnson’s Salty Grifballs. Even though STRAJCAMB! put up a tough fight, JSG managed to keep their undefeated streak and won with a score of 8-1, moving on to the final for the first time in the team’s history. The other final was made up of two teams who had never reached the final either, but two of very different histories. Storm Hawks were competing in their first EUGBL, while Sarge’s Angels where competing in their ninth consecutive season, featuring in all but the very first league over 3 years ago. Thanks to some impressive technical play, Sarge’s Angels managed to overcome their tanking opponents and scored a 7-2 victory to progress to the final.
With the final now decided, it was also agreed that a 3rd/4th playoff would be played between the two losing teams. In what would turn out to be the last game of the season, the match ended in…. well….. a forfeit. After weeks of the teams failing to get the game done, the deadline for the match was finally passed with the game not being played. However, Storm Hawks where given the 3rd place spot due to them being the team who was able to make the games, with Screw The Rules failing to get a team together. So 3rd place goes to Storm Hawks.
Now that we’ve got to the end, it’s time to talk about the finale. The main event. The championship match. Sarge’s Angels vs. Johnson’s Salty Grifballs, two teams who both formed for the UKGBSML08 over 3 years ago. In the final match, Sarge’s Angels managed to start strong and picked up a quick 2-0 lead, putting JSG on the back foot. However, JSG managed to make a strong comeback and in the end managed to pick up a 7-2 win and became the new European Grifball Champions.
CHAMPIONS – JOHNSON’S SALTY GRIFBALLS
Yes, Johnson’s Salty Grifballs are the new European Grifball Champions and have become the 8th team to hold this accolade, with all of their players winning the league for the first time, three of them being former runners-up and the other two being players new to the league.
