After reading a few articles and reviews from people in the games editorial space I can trust, I decided to jump on the hype train for Bayonetta – and I’m glad that I did.
Bayonetta is an action game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 coming from Platinum Games, and director Hideki Kamiya, who made Devil May Cry. Taking place in the fictional English town of Vigrid, the game follows the heroine Bayonetta, an Umbra Witch that has no recollection of her past but slowly starts to remember and learn of it as the game goes on.
Bayonetta is similar to other action games – the combat system, chain combos, and ” upgrade orbs” (in Bayonetta its Halos, because you fight angels) all leading up to getting new weapons, accessories, and combat talents. However, I feel Bayonetta does it better than the rest of them. The action is extremely fast paced, but it is very smooth and the presentation is a fantastic work of fluidity and detail that rivals any other game I’ve played in a long time. Everything from gunning enemies down, kicking them around, and using magical finishers is extremely satisfying and a lot of fun. Combos typically are a mixture of kicks, gun shots, and punches that end up finishing with some crazy fist or stiletto heel that is made out of…your hair (which your outfit is also made out of) as they come through a dimensional rift and decimate your enemies. I cannot be sure why this happens, but it is very enjoyable to watch and to pull off.
Any fan of action games like DMC should be used to fighting lots of bosses, and Bayonetta is no different. I will not spoil any of them for you, but all of the ones I have encountered so far have been very interesting, and there are a lot of them.
The only foreboding thing I am able to mention to you is that if you only own a Playstation 3, do not buy this game! Sega botched the porting so badly that at times the game feels unplayable. The graphical quality suffers, and the framerate tends to slow to a chug. I’m not sure if they are going to be able to patch it at any point, but for now, if you have both a 360 and a PS3, spend your money wisely and purchase the 360 version.
Anyway, to end it on a good note, over the last few hours of play, I did not want to put the controller down. The amazing visuals and addictive combat will keep you engaged for hours, as well as the so far good storyline. I will recommend Bayonetta based on that, if you are at all interested in this type of game, go out and get it. You will not be disappointed.
