Hello! We’re about 3/4ths of the way through this AGLA season and I figured it was time for another community power rankings before we get into playoffs. This time I wanted to do all the leagues, not just pro. Voting was open to all members of the community for the last couple days, and I used everybody’s responses to get the aggregate ranking below. This is the ammy edition, so I brought in some help for the writeups. Dooms Day 584, hybrid for Supernova, and Sobriety XD, captain of Evolution are here to break down the teams for us. Let’s get into it!
1. Defiance (Avg: 1.83)
Sobriety: This team is easily the favorite to win the ship. They have such a good balance of players it’s really tough to break through them. Broly being the main tank of the group is really good at being patient and out tanking just about anyone on the other team. And while he’s really great at tanking, he’s also pretty awesome at running too. You seriously can’t sleep on Broly. Rice is also a really good ball runner. He’s not afraid to pull out his sword and start stabbing through some dudes though that is also his downfall. At times he can be more concentrated on the opposing ball runner and not focused on the players in front of him. He is good, but he should try and focus on everyone on the court. Now the rest of them are pretty dominate when it comes to offense, but when it comes to defense these guys could be a bit more aggressive. All out though these guys are definitely an outstanding team. I honestly feel this team is going to win the whole thing. But hey, better watch out. Evolution may be on the trail to redemption. (;
2. Supernova (Avg: 2.11)
Sobriety: Next there was a strong tie up for me personally between Last Chance and Supernova. Both teams are pretty dominate tanking wise but SN definitely has holding onto the ball in their top priorities. They have 3 potential ball runners on their team between Dooms Day, Mr Epic Beast, and Nikodemons. Niko is obviously a much stronger tank than the other two but honestly not by much, especially considering Epic and Dooms Day don’t play as often. With either Epic or Dooms Day as the runner then that makes this team almost impossible to tank through with Jester and Niko. Jester is without a doubt the secret weapon on this team. Though sometimes he doesn’t pose as much of a threat as other times, never overlook this guy. Before you know it he’s breathing down your runners neck with a handy sword out, ready to cause havoc.
3. Evolution (Avg: 3.22)
Dooms: I find it interesting that Evolution is up here considering the kind of game we (Supernova) played against them. It wasn’t that they were bad, it’s just that I didn’t think they were the 3rd best team in the league. They’re very solid, with three of their starters, Squeeps, Sobriety and Cyber, all having positive K/Ds but it’s their fourth spot that sets them further down the list than a few other teams, in my opinion. I don’t think this team has the tanking power to necessarily out tank Defiance / Supernova / Last Chance w/ Haylie straight up, but they’re solid enough that they should be able to hold their own and wait for chances to score.
For me, success for this team going forward means two things:
1. Ball Security. One thing I noticed during our game was their nonchalant nature when running the ball, specifically when Cyber had it. If they can tighten up their ball security, which they might have done since our last meeting, then this team should stay in the mix with the seasoned veterans they have on their team.
2. Finding a Consistent Fourth. Sobriety has tried out quite a few options with their fourth spot, plugging in Blando Bangz, Detox Faded and DanglyPants and none of them have really run away the job. Since I played with half of this team last year, my pick would be Dangly since I know what he can bring (steady defense, court awareness) and since he has significant play time with Cyber from last season on Oblivion (RIP).
If Evolution is going to have a shot at beating the upper tier teams, they’ll have to patch these holes before they do so. If not, I can see them staying around the 3 / 4 spot heading into the playoffs, but not getting much higher than that.
4. Last Chance (Avg: 3.56)
Sobriety: At first these guys didn’t pose much of a threat. We had our first few games against this team, and wouldn’t you know it they were all in the same night. The first game we pretty much breezed through. The second game they switched out their two starters for both their draft picks. Now, being new to the leagues and only playing two AGLA seasons I wouldn’t expect their draft picks to be any good considering I’ve never seen or heard of them before. But Demon Hammer and HayIie both proved me wrong when we played against them. They were strong, aggressive tanks and HayIie even a little bit of a hybrid. With DJ or Wolverine running the ball I can easily see these guys winning the ship. But not without playing against the other top teams who also have a good chance at winning it all.
Editor’s note: The Hayiie situation exploded last night and he/she has been suspended, and this team’s future is uncertain. I don’t have high hopes for them making a playoff run.
5. Impaired Judgement (Avg: 4.78)
Dooms: I very nearly went to this team during bidding and was rooting for them to do well even after I ended up on Supernova, but this team has a big issue that will be very hard to solve with whom they have on their roster – they have no tanking. On another team, Al and Panther would be solid 4ths, but heading this team, they just don’t have enough taking prowess between them to compete with the likes of really anyone, save System Failure. Juc has performed admirably as the lead tank, but beyond him there really is not a solid enough 2nd to complement him for this team to score consistently. I would imagine that they have already tried to implement pass plays into their game scheme, and knowing Panther and Al I’m sure they were going to do that anyway, but if this team is going to have any success going forward it is going to have to come in the form of passing plays. Spread the field out, win 1 v 1s and try and make rounds as quick as possible. The longer this team digs into games, the more their tanking issues will show and that’s when a team like this can get into real trouble.
6. System Failure (Avg: 5.50)
Dooms: If Impaired Judgement has tanking issues, what System Failure has is something else entirely. They actually remind me a lot of Oblivion last year, where there’s talent here but no one on the team can really be that lead tank the team needs to drive in offensive pushes. This issue is even more apparent when you look at the game we (Supernova) just had against them in which they subbed in Haylie and ended up winning 5-2, as opposed to our first meeting when we steamrolled them 5-0 in one of the shortest games we had all season. Haylie was able to provide that lead tanking role and allow Panda / Spoon to settle in as support tanks and it was like we were playing a completely different team. But looking at this team without the support of insane Subs, they just don’t have that one key player they need to push them over the edge and help them start climbing back into contention. There’s talent here, especially Panda has been excellent this season, but without Haylie subbing for them every game I don’t see how this team will continually compete with the other teams at the top of the standings.
That’s all for the Ammy rankings. Big thanks to Sobriety and Dooms Day for helping with the writeups. Be on the lookout for the Legacy and Pro rankings in the next couple days!
