Ten Questions with I CITI I

citi

I CITI I is a member of the grifball team Separate Intelligence in the 2009 Grifball Winter league. SI recently defeated the Grunts of Fury in their final four playoff game, moving on to the championship game.

1. How long have you been involved with the sport of Grifball?
1 year, 2 months 2 days, 20 hours, 47 minutes (as of 2/17/09 at 3:30 EST)

2. What kind of player are you?
I’m a straight up “juke tank”. I dance the night away and I’m terrible with the bomb, unless I betray my carrier on the way in and pick up the rebound. I really haven’t changed my play style at all since I first started playing. I never adopted the whole hammer jump technique, or anything like that.

3. If you could change one thing about Grifball or its community, what would that be?
I’d get rid of “host”, so the games are fair for everyone.

4. Is there a player/team that has inspired your style of play?
One of the people that really struck me as “good” when I first started playing was PhoenixRage. I wound up in a game with him somehow and got radar killed by him the entire time. I also downloaded everything on his file share before GBWL08 playoffs started and watched all his games and clips to give me a better sense of the hammer range, since at that time nobody knew it better than he did.

5. Name one player who always gives you fits when you play against them. What makes them so difficult to play against?
There aren’t a whole lot of players that I can’t at least go positive against. I LOVE playing against hammer jumpers because they leave themselves so vulnerable all the time. I don’t even mind going against people using swords. I had a game during GBSML08 where I had 19 bulltrues.

What I do struggle against is a player that has lots and lots and lots of patience, great timing, and a really good sense of the hammer range (aka Doc Status).

6. Name one player you think is underrated by most. Why?
I have to give a shout out to my boy Lord Stanley2. He’s the first person I ever played grifball with (playing splitscreen, hungover after his 21st birthday), and is really unknown since he’s pretty quiet on the forums. He averaged +10 better than me per game this season though, and really is one of the best tanks out there.

7. Name one player you think is overrated by most. Why?
I’d say me. I always put up decent stats during the regular season, but put me in a game that matters and I choke pretty hard.

8. Besides Grifball, what other games/sports do you play?
I was a Division I track/cross country runner for 3 years before realizing how much I hated my coach. I also played baseball from the time I was first able to swing a bat until my senior year of high school. I tried football for a couple years, but at 5’8″ and 125 pounds, my quickness just wasn’t enough. And I never played it competitively or anything, but I’m a mighty fine Ultimate Frisbee player.

As far as games, I like RPGs (Fallout 3, anything made by Bioware), Guitar Hero, racing games, Ninja Gaiden, sports games…a little bit of everything I guess.

9. In your opinion, do stats matter in Grifball?
There’s 1 stat that matters. The final score.

10. If you could offer words of advice to rookie players, what would they be?
You’ll enjoy this “sport” and be more successful if you find a team full of your friends. You’re not going to win every game, but you’ll have a lot of fun even in losses if you’re playing with people you enjoy.

I love that you show humility about your ball carrying skills and then the video is of you getting a killpocalypse with the ball.

I couldn’t stop laughing after seeing that vid.

I agree with number 3. I’ve been dulling my connection down with my pc to prevent from pulling host in practices, because once you get used to having it for so long and play without it you play like garbage. It’s too large of an advantage (for players that make use out of it) which can really be very manipulative of league games.

Very true of number of number 9. You’ll hear me say it a million times, but I can’t stand how people rave of K/D ratio. Sometimes you have to get in and “get your hands dirty” even if it means getting in the middle and occupying multiple rivaling players to give the carrier some space to work with and move around in when moving ahead.
